What is sciatica?
Sciatica is a pain that shoots down the back of your leg caused by an irritation to your sciatic nerve, the largest and longest nerve in your body. The sciatic nerve can be as thick as your thumb and it extends from your lower back all the way down into your foot. Irritation is usually caused by 2 main problems, either direct mechanical compression or chemical irritation such as that caused by inflammation or swelling in the area.
How is it diagnosed?
Sciatica is not just any leg pain but a very specific type of pain, often accompanied by odd sensations such as tingling or numbness. We will consider where you feel the pain/tingling/numbness, whether or not there are any other signs a nerve may be involved, such as weakness or loss of reflexes, and also your response to a series or orthopaedic tests (tests designed to provoke particular problems).
How well does sciatica respond to chiropractic treatment?
This depends entirely on why you have your sciatica in the first place. Sometimes it's clear to us that your problem will respond well and other times it can be less clear. Above all else we will be completely honest as to how likely you are to respond but the most important thing is to get an accurate diagnosis.
